When asked why this was built I foibled and said to commemorate all of the wars France lost. I meant fought in. Oops. Nothing like a self loathing Frenchman. There's got to be one I guess. In case you don't know, it was completed in 1836, twenty-five years after construction commenced, to commemorate all those who fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic wars. The body of the Unknown Soldier is there.
Can't make fun of that. It kind of is glorious, no really, I mean it. It is beautiful.
